Freyberger grills Halloween bird
Nuremberg. The Freyberger butcher's shop has been getting ready for Halloween since the beginning of October. Be it a black meat loaf , spooky recipes such as black pasta or even a pitch-black bratwurst - the butcher's shop leaves nothing out. They even include a black pudding burger , the Heavy Halloween, in their range. But now Dirk Freyberger has gone for the cake. A crow, in fact. It lands not only at his feet, but directly on his plate.
A scary bird for the horror festival
"We have been waiting for this opportunity for weeks," reveals Dirk. He had been asking hunter friends to bring him a raven for a long time, but suddenly the phone rang and the crow fluttered into his house. It is important to note that ravens are protected animals - it is not permitted to hunt these birds. Crows, on the other hand, are not a problem. However, crows are corvids, and the beak and size of the animal make the difference.
"I wanted to do something special again for Halloween," explains the butcher. Last Halloween, the world champion butcher went viral by dissolving a calf's brain and presenting it on TikTok. "Halloween has to be scary and a scary bird fits perfectly with the horror festival," adds the Nuremberg native.
Can you eat crow?
Of course, the Bratwurst King shows the complete package. From plucking to boning to preparation, everything can be seen in this video . "I've never plucked a bird before and I'm starting with a crow," says the butcher.
Dirk knows a lot about poultry . He also always takes care of the poultry in his team, the Butcher Wolfpack, the German national butchers' team and current world champions . "In theory, it doesn't make any difference when it comes to deboning, because the anatomy of the birds is very similar, but with the crow it's a completely new experience," replies the butcher.
It is also a challenge to prepare, adds Dirk. But is crow actually edible now? The meat sommelier does not answer this question. "Just watch the video and everyone will get the answer as to whether we will include crow in our range in the future," says Freyberger.
