Lahmacun | Turkish pizza

Lahmacun is also often referred to as Turkish pizza and is a popular dish in Turkish cuisine. It is traditionally made from thin dough topped with a spicy mixture of ground meat, finely chopped onions, tomato paste, peppers and various spices such as parsley. Lahmacun is usually baked in the oven until the dough is crispy and the toppings are well cooked through. It is often served with fresh vegetables such as lettuce and cucumber, and drizzled with a squeeze of lemon.

The dish is served as a snack or as a main course and is popular with both locals and tourists. In Turkey, Lahmacun is often prepared fresh at markets or by street vendors and eaten on the spot. But you can easily make Turkish pizza yourself.

The preparation of Lahmacun can vary depending on the region, but the basic recipe remains essentially the same. The Lahmacun dough in particular is usually very similar. The yeast dough for Turkish pizza is easy to prepare and is reminiscent of flatbread: The ingredients for the dough are flour, yeast, lukewarm water, olive oil and salt. In our recipe we also add a little yogurt.

First you have to put the flour and salt in a large bowl and mix them together. Then, if you are using fresh yeast, dissolve it in the warm water. If you are using dry yeast, you can add it directly to the flour. Now add water, olive oil and yoghurt and knead everything into a smooth dough. You can do this with your hands or with a food processor. Now cover the dough and leave it in a warm place for about 30 minutes. Once the dough is ready, portion it and shape each one into a ball. Then we roll out the dough ball thinly on a floured work surface with a rolling pin and spread it with the minced meat sauce.

Now place the dough flatbreads on a baking tray and put them in the oven. You can also do this on a pizza stone in the grill. After baking for about 10 minutes, when the dough has taken on a light color, you can take the finished Lahmacun out of the oven and fill it with the topping of your choice. At the end, sprinkle everything with a little lemon juice and roll it up. You see: You can easily bake Lahmacun yourself in the oven. Just try our recipe for Lahmacun.

Some variations of Lahmacun can also contain garlic sauce, sumac or parsley as additional ingredients. Pointed peppers are also often used. So you can season and adapt the dish as you like. It can also be easily prepared at home, with the toppings and the Lahmacun filling being chosen according to taste. A vegetarian version is also possible by replacing the minced meat with mushrooms or other vegetables. Homemade Lahmacun are therefore particularly versatile and delicious.
