Freyberger at the Grill World Championships
The 2024 Grill and BBQ World Championship will take place on July 27th and 28th in Stuttgart at the exhibition center. Also taking part: the Freyberger butcher shop from Nuremberg. Both the World Barbecue Association (WBQA) and the German Barbecue Association (GBA) are organizing the competition. Over 100 teams from all over the world are taking part in the championship and have to present six different courses to the jury over two days, namely:
- chicken with side dish
- boneless pork with side dish
- vegetarian sweet or salty
- fish with side dish
- Pork with bones with side dish
- beef with side dish
The participants are given a predetermined basket for the courses and are only allowed to move within the basket. Each of the BBQ enthusiasts can score points with the various dishes and win the title of world champion. In addition to second and third place, there is also the chance to become the world champion in a category and a total prize money of 13,500 euros.
"One world championship title is not enough for me"
The Freyberger butcher shop is sending the world butcher champion Dirk Freyberger and Pascal Karatay, the winner of Butcher Wars Germany 2024, into the race. Together with Frank Heller and Markus Rheindt, they form the Freybergers BBQ team. "We've been training for weeks now and refining the recipes," explains Dirk. Both are very ambitious and on the hunt for more titles. "One world championship title isn't enough for me," Freyberger replies.
In 2022, the butcher won the trophy at the World Butchers' Championship in the USA, proving what German craftsmanship can do. Now gold on the grill is to follow. "We prepare the meat by hand, but of course we also do the cooking," says the meat sommelier. Both are part of the butcher's trade and everyone should be aware of that, adds Freyberger.
"Our secret weapon is craftsmanship"
The competition at this World Cup is tough. BBQ professionals are competing from different parts of the world. South America, Africa and Scandinavia are among those represented. "It will be anything but easy to compete against this culinary armada," says Dirk. Aware of this fact, the Freybergers BBQ team trains very hard and works on the courses every week. "We have had good success in training so far and are ready for the competition. The competition will have a few tricks up its sleeve, but our secret weapon is craftsmanship," announces Freyberger.
