Reigning Bratwurst King goes crazy
In 2023, Dirk Freyberger won the title of Bratwurst King for his butcher shop. To do this, he took part in the annual Franconian Bratwurst Summit in Pegnitz. But he wasn't the only one to win the crown. Freyberger also managed to win all the other prizes. He took first place for the classic Franconian Bratwurst , won gold for his creative bratwurst Cheesy Gonzales and also won over the visitors by receiving the audience award. "I'm very proud, but not just of myself, but of my entire team - without my crew, something like this wouldn't be possible," explains the master butcher.
Bratwurst Summit on May 12, 2024
The next Bratwurst Summit is already in the starting blocks. Traditionally, it always takes place on the Sunday before Pentecost. This year, on May 12th. Freyberger will be there again and is planning a surprise attack. "We want to take part with a new creative bratwurst and our customers should make the decision," replies Dirk.
He has developed three different sausages, which are available for sale. The flavors, however, are likely to shock conservative Franconians. "We have developed a doner sausage , a pizza sausage and a cheese spaetzle sausage ," says the meat sommelier.
Anonymous critics take a stand
"It's true that just because you've won something once doesn't mean you can rest on your laurels," says Dirk. The butcher's shop has to take risks and bring the bratwurst into the modern age. But that can only be done with fresh ideas and a sense of the zeitgeist, he adds. What conservative critics think about it is of little importance - the bratwurst king often receives negative feedback for his unusual recipe ideas.
"The critics hide behind anonymity on our social media channels and complain about our creations without the intention of ever trying them," reveals Freyberger. But that doesn't bother him much, because: "If you don't move with the times, you'll be left behind," says Dirk. For this reason, the butcher shop continues to advocate openness and uses its craft for creative innovations.
Creative sausages available as a sample package
The sausages are available as a sample package , both in the branches and in the butcher's online shop. Customers are asked to give their feedback. This can be done either via the website, directly in the shop or, of course, on the Freybergers' relevant social media channels. The master butcher sends the winning sausage to the Franconian Bratwurst Summit.
It is not yet clear which bratwurst it will be in the end. Even the king cannot judge. "I am excited to see which bratwurst we will submit as the creative bratwurst of 2024. But one thing is certain - I will defend my crown with all my might," Dirk announces.
